How to measure.

3 minutes with a steel tape measure. No tradesman needed — thousands of DIY installs get it right first time by following these three rules.

Rule 1 — Decide inside or outside mount

Inside mount — shutters sit neatly inside the window reveal. Measure the inside of the frame. Choose this if your reveal is at least 35 mm deep and square.

measure the frame's outside edge

Outside mount — shutters fix to the wall over the frame. Measure the outside of the window frame itself, adding 30–50 mm on each side so the shutters cover the frame and let in maximum light.

Rule 2 — Measure three times, use the smallest

W1 W2 W3 H1 H2 H3

Width: measure at the top, middle and bottom of the opening. Height: measure at the left, middle and right. Old frames are rarely square — use the smallest number for each. Enter millimetres (e.g. 1235 mm).

Rule 3 — Keep panels in a sensible range

1 panel ≤ 900 mm 2 panels 900–1800 mm 3 panels 1800–2700 mm

Each panel should be roughly 450–900 mm wide. The order form suggests a panel count automatically from your width — 3 and 4-panel windows carry a small hardware surcharge (+$30 / +$50 per window).

Before you order — quick checklist

  • ✓ Measured in millimetres, twice, smallest number used
  • ✓ Chose inside or outside mount on the order form
  • ✓ Checked for obstructions: door handles, power points, skirting boards, sloping frames
  • ✓ Window opens? Leave the shutters clear of the handle swing, or mount outside
  • ✓ Something unusual? Don't guess — text us a photo on 0432 456 501 and we'll tell you exactly what to measure
